Yoenis Cespedes will seemingly be out an extended period of time for the Mets after pulling his hamstring. What is the fantasy fallout?

It may be an understatement to say that the Mets are currently hitting a rough patch. Injuries and a losing streak have become storylines of their 2017 season, and today things somehow got worse. Yoenis Cespedes pulled his hammy running to second and the Mets think that he will be “out a while”

No one will argue that Cespedes produces when on the field. He has been tremendous for the Mets since joining the team in 2015. So far this season, he holds a .262/6 HR/10 RBI/.976 OPS line. Unfortunately, for as good as he is, there always seem to be nagging injuries that pop up.

When it comes to the hammy situation this season, the Mets botched the entire process. Cespedes has clearly been battling something over the last few weeks, but the Mets seemed to not air on the side of safety, and instead kept inserting him in the lineup. In their defense, Cespedes said that he could play through it, but the Mets could not afford to lose him.

From a fantasy perspective, owners are losing an early round value selection that will be nearly impossible to replace off the waiver wire.  The Mets have a ton of OF on their roster, Brandon Nimmo is on the comeback trail as well, so they will have bodies to fill his spot for the time being.

For those looking on the waiver wire, some possible pickups could be the uber-talented Aaron Altherr from the Phillies, the power option of Scott Schebler from the Reds, or the deep league dart throw of Leury Garcia from the White Sox.

Altherr has been on a tear at the plate the last two weeks and has the raw talent to be a 15 HR/15 SB type of producer.

Schebler showed pop in the minors and even though he got off to a slow start this season, the power has started to come as of late.

Garcia is a speculative add. He lacks an extensive track record, but is hot at the plate and is demanding starts in center for Chicago.

Losing Cespedes sucks for the Mets and fantasy owners. Injuries have decimated a lot of fantasy rosters so far this season, and this is just another example. But, there are some intriguing OF options that exist on the waiver wire.
