The Giants and fantasy owners will be without ace starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner for at least a month. He injured his ribs and left AC joint in a dirt bike accident.

For the first time in his career, San Francisco Giants ace pitcher Madison Bumgarner finds himself on the disabled list. The weird thing is that it’s not because of anything he did on the mound. MadBum got into a dirt bike accident on Friday and injured his ribs and left shoulder AC joint.

He is one of the top-three starting pitchers in the league and his absence affects all fantasy leagues. It hurts the owners that have him and helps that owner’s opponents until he returns. In his four starts

Bumgarner is as consistent as they come. He has made a minimum of 31 starts and thrown at least 201 innings in each of his first six full seasons. Bumgarner averaged a 3.00 ERA, 1.079 WHIP and 16-10 record. This season seems to be more of the same.

More from Fantasy Baseball

Despite the 0-3 record, he has a 3.00 ERA, 1.074 WHIP, 28 strikeouts and four walks. With the injury and follow-up reports, it doesn’t look like Bumgarner will reach those previous plateaus.

If you have an open DL spot, that now belongs to Bumgarner. If it’s occupied, you have a tough decision to make. Depending on the caliber of player, the top-15 pick will likely take precedent.

The good news is that he has already been released from the hospital. The bad news was tweeted by Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

There’s been no other information released. Bumgarner will be reevaluated next week. Until then, let’s look at some replacements for him.

We talked about him already, but Andrew Triggs is pitching well for Oakland. He is 3-0 and hasn’t allowed a run in 17.2 innings. Triggs hasn’t pitched more than six innings, but that’s enough for the win and quality start. His next start will be against the Seattle Mariners at home. He is owned in just 30.6 percent of ESPN leagues.

A deeper option is Minnesota pitcher Hector Santiago. His first three starts give reason for optimism when looking at his previous seasons. Santiago has a 1.47 ERA, 0.873 WHIP, 5.4 K/9 and 1.5 BB/9. He won’t get you a lot of strikeouts, but low run and hit totals are key.

Jeremy Hellickson is the third starting pitcher I recommend. He left his first two outings after five innings with forearm issues. In his most recent start, Hellickson went seven innings and allowed two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out two. Similar to Santiago, he won’t strike out many batters, but he’s another one with low ratio stats.

Next: Avisail Garcia worth a waiver add?

This injury could be the biggest of them all so far. MadBum was drafted as the No. 2 starting pitcher in the majority of leagues. His owners (myself included) are scrambling to the waiver wire. Let’s hope you find yourself a solid fill in if you need one.
