Asdrubal Cabrera is on a tear at the plate over the last two weeks for the Mets. Can fantasy owners now make him a must add of the waiver wire?

The New York Mets will look at the 2016 campaign as a lost year, after injuries have ravaged the team all season. While their offensive woes are certainly a big factor as well, injuries have to be the theme of the season. That theme continued this week as, Neil Walker, will now opt for surgery and miss the rest of the year.

Behind Yoenis Cespedes, Walker is easily the Mets best offensive weapon, making the loss that much more disappointing. We offered fantasy owners potential Walker replacements here, but what if the best option fantasy owners can turn to, wears the same uniform. Enter in: Asdrubal Cabrera.

More from Fantasy Baseball

Asdrubal Cabrera has quietly been one of the most consistent infielders in the game over the last handful of seasons. Over that span he has averaged a, .260/16 HR/60 RBI/.750 OPS line, which is solid especially from a guy who has played shortstop for most of his career. Fantasy owners seemingly have overlooked him since his rough two-year stretch during the 2013-2014 seasons, but he has rebounded nicely over the last two years.

With Neil Walker now out of the picture, Jose Reyes and Asdrubal Cabrera will be leaned on no more than ever if the Mets still want a shot at the playoffs. The silver lining for the Mets though, is that both hitters are hot recently, especially Cabrera, who has a, .419/ 5 HR/13 RBI/1.307 OPS over the last two weeks or so. Giving him a, .272/18 HR/46 RBI/.779 OPS, seasonal line.

While it is only a two-week hot streak, Fantasy owners should look to his second half power surge as an indicator of his value moving forward. Since the All-Star break, he has mashed nine homers after only having eight total the entire first half of the season. With a month to go, and Cabrera already homering in his one AB in September, he could easily flirt with his career high 25 HR before the end of the season.

The Mets lineup has been lackluster and things do not seem to on the verge of improving, but Cabrera could offer solid power stats as a MI waiver wire add. Even though Cabrera has played in at least 136 games over the last five seasons, he does battle his fair share of nagging injuries. He is currently battling a knee ailment, which is the only reason that his recent stat line is not even better, but he is back into the starting lineup as of Sept. 2.

Batting in the two-hole will offer him a decent chance to post solid counting stats, so his value is not going to be any higher than right now. With the fantasy playoffs practically here, adding batters that are on hot streaks is a must do. Asdrubal Cabrera is by no means a fantasy dynamo, but he provides a weekly advantage at a weak position. Do not over think things, make the move.
