Mets pitcher Matt Harvey will undergo surgey for his right shoulder, ending his 2016 season. If you own him, it’s time to move on and pick up someone else.

The New York Mets will continue the second half of the season without one of their starting pitchers. The team announced that Matt Harvey will undergo surgery to alleviate thoracic outlet syndrome in his right shoulder. This surgery will end his 2016 season. If you own him, this is both good and bad news.

Harvey has struggled all season, so I guess it’s good to know what was causing it. After going 13-8 with a 2.71 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 8.9 K/9, this season was a complete 180. In 17 starts, he has a 4-10 record with a 4.86 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 7.4 K/9.

Some of the losses can be attributed by the Mets’ lack of scoring, but the ratio stats don’t back him up. He did look good at the beginning of June, four starts with two or fewer earned runs, but his July 4 outing was back to what he has been.

Matt Harvey went 3.2 innings and allowed five earned runs on 11 hits and struck out four. He was placed on the disabled list two days later. Thoracic outlet syndrome is a compression of nerves and blood vessels in the shoulder area that is often alleviated by the removal of a rib. That sounds painful. Phil Hughes underwent the same procedure earlier this week.

Marc Carig, Mets beat writer for Newsday, tweeted what manager Terry Collins said about Harvey after his most recent outing. It doesn’t sound fun at all.

The Mets rotation can’t afford another loss. Both Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz are dealing with bone spurs in their elbows, but the level of significance is unknown. Jacob deGrom has been amazing and Bartolo Colon is what he is at this point.

Logan Verrett looks to fill in over the weekend as the No. 5 starter, but it’s open for the rest of the season. Zack Wheeler has suffered some setbacks while recovering from Tommy John surgery and a return date is unknown. The rest of the Mets options are not worth mentioning.

There are a lot of starting pitchers worth adding in all league formats. Milwaukee Brewers Junior Guerra is owned in just 53 percent of ESPN leagues. Zach Eflin of the Philadelphia Phillies has three straight quality starts and owned in just 5.5 percent of leagues.

In keeper and dynasty leagues, I would still drop Matt Harvey. He won’t be back this season and, if you want him in the future, he should be available late in your draft. The Dark Knight has gone into hiding.
