Mark Teixeira’s 2016 season could be over. He suffered a cartilage tear in his right knee. If surgery is required, he’ll be out for the rest of the season.

The New York Yankees 2016 is not going the way management and fans would have wanted. It started with the Aroldis Chapman suspension (it was known that it was possible before the trade), Andrew Miller injury and slow start by the offense. While some of those issues are behind them, the offense just lost a major piece. First baseman Mark Teixeira was placed on the disabled list and could be done for the season.

Teixeira’s season wasn’t the season anyone was looking forward to. In 48 games, he has just three home runs, 12 RBI and a .180/.271/.263 line. He also has 49 strikeouts and 21 walks. He was pretty healthy to start, only missing six games, but you can never be too sure with Mark Teixeira.

He hasn’t played over 150 games since 2011 when he played in 156 games. His games played after that were 123, 15, 123, and 111. Despite the low games total, he hit 31 homers and 79 RBI with a .255 average last season.

The Yankees do not have many replacement options at first base. Veteran James Loney was snatched up by in-state rival New York Mets. The team lost prospect Greg Bird to torn labrum and Dustin Ackley was transferred to the 60-day DL.

Chris Parmalee’s contract was purchased to fill Mark Teixeira’s spot. He is hitting .255/.343/.444 with Triple-A Scranton.Rob Refsnyder could be a rest-day fill in, but he doesn’t have much experience. The Yankees also have Nick Swisher down in the minors.

None of these players are worth adding in fantasy. Teixeira wasn’t getting it done in this lineup, so why would anyone else? Unless you play in the deepest of leagues, look elsewhere for a replacement.

There are plenty of available options on the waiver wire. Mike Napoli (42.3 percent owned) has four home runs and 10 RBI in his last eight games. Ryan Zimmerman (42.7 percent) is on a five-game hit streak. Dae-ho Lee of the Seattle Mariners has 11 hits (two home runs), eight RBI and a .478 average in his last 23 at bats.

Mark Teixeira is currently resting the knee, waiting to see if surgery is the only option. If so, the 33.2 percent of ESPN owners that have him can safely drop him. Even if he comes back after the DL stint, I would still drop him. He hasn’t done enough to warrant a fantasy roster spot.

As for next season, his time as a top-15 first baseman are long gone. He is not draftable.
