Trevor May looks to be the only shutdown arm at the backend of the Minnesota Twins bullpen, and he looks ticketed to possibly become the closer in the near future.

The Minnesota Twins have had a rough go of things so far this season, and find themselves as the worst team in the A.L. Even though the Twins may not win many games, they still have a fair share of fantasy contributors that can offer production. The backend of the Twins bullpen looked to be headlined by Glen Perkins, with Kevin Jepsen as the setup man, but that has not gone to plan.

Perkins once again is down with an injury and his return date is murkier than ever. Jepsen has been shaky this season, especially after being named the team’s closer, leaving the Twins bullpen in absolute flux.

Enter in: Trevor May.

After coming over to the Twins in 2013, May has parlayed an astounding 2014 season into a role with the major league club the last two seasons. His time as a starter has not gone to plan, even though he has the raw stuff, so the Twins decided to transition him to a full-time bullpen role this season.

More from Fantasy Baseball

Trevor May has mostly worked in the seventh or eighth inning this season, and he has been on a tear lately. He has not surrendered a run since April 24, and over his last seven appearances he has been nearly lights out. On the season he has a microscopic 1.87 ERA over 19 IP, has 27 K and a 12.8 SO/9.

The Twins have not made any move officially yet, but one would have to think that May will soon be given the closing reigns over the ineffective Jepsen and his 5.40 ERA. Adding him in fantasy is a pure speculative move at this point, but all signs point to him eventually being given the role.

Trevor May’s value is obviously hampered by the Twins struggles this season, but his peripheral stats offer owners in deeper leagues a nice RP arm that provides ample strikeouts. Once he is given the official designation, he will become a hot waiver wire add, so fantasy owners should snag him now if they have room and avoid competing against other owners for his services. The arm talent is legit and the Twins are not as bad as they have shown this season, so his arrow should be pointing upwards.
