Kansas City Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas was placed on the 15-day DL with a fractured thumb. He could be out longer than the minimum, though.

Bad news striking the Kansas City Royals this week as their star third baseman, Mike Moustakas finds himself on the 15-day disabled list due to a fracture in his left thumb. Moustakas has already sat for three games this week due to the lingering issues it has caused him. The Royals see it fit to give him ample time off to recover as the team made the move Saturday morning.

However, the move is retroactive from May 5. It is unclear as to when he will return at the moment, which means he could be out longer than the 15-day minimum.

The Royals have called up Cheslor Cuthbert to replace Moustakas at third base. He and teammate, Christian Colon expect to split time at third while The Moose recovers. This is certainly a big hit for Kansas City as Moustakas has been a key ingredient for the Royals success over the past three seasons. He helped the team reach two consecutive World Series berths, which ultimately produced a ring for KC last season. A feat which is very difficult to accomplish.

The Royals currently stand in a tie for third in the American League Central with the Detroit Tigers at 14-14. The Moose will certainly be missed. Mike Moustakas has been off to a nice start to the 2016 season. His average currently sits at .258 for the season. He has also hit for seven home runs and 13 RBI to go along with 12 runs scored. Over the past three seasons, Moustakas has proven to be one the elite at third base for not only the Royals, but fantasy owners as well.

With the call up of Cuthbert, Royals fans still have reason to be excited. Cuthbert has posted solid number so far this season at Triple-A Omaha. He is batting .333 with seven homers and 28 RBI, great production from the young 23-year-old this early in the season. Perhaps the Royals won’t even miss a beat. Cuthbert could be nice pick up for a few weeks for your fantasy team as the pressures of making his MLB debut are behind him. He made his debut last season for the Royals.

For fantasy owners out there, Mike Moustakas should simply be stored on your bench for the time being or put on your disabled list if your league has that option. It may sting a bit to lose such a promising and productive fantasy player, but that is why you can’t drop him. You will regret that decision later in the season if you decide to go that route.

Mike Moustakas ranks in the top 10 for all fantasy third baseman so far this season. This stat will continue when he is able to return to the lineup as the Kansas City Royals are certainly gearing up for a third straight World Series run this season.
