The Yankees called up outfielder Ben Gamel for some outfield depth. Can he provide you with any fantasy help while he is in the majors?

The New York Yankees are not having the best season so far. They won their first game since April 25. They defeated the Baltimore Orioles 7-0, but it came at a cost. Brett Gardner left the game Wednesday after getting hit by a pitch. X-rays taken on Gardner’s right arm came back negative, but he will sit out Thursday’s game. In a preemptive measure, the Yankees called up Ben Gamel from Triple-A. What kind of production can he give you?

Gamel had a successful 2015 season in Scranton. In 129 games, he hit 10 home runs, 64 RBI and .300 with 13 steals. He spent the cold months playing in the Venezuelan Winter League before coming back to Triple-A this season. In 23 games, he has one home run, nine RBI and a .286 average with seven steals on nine attempts.

As far as Thursday’s game goes, Dustin Ackley and Aaron Hicks will flank Jacoby Ellsbury in the outfield. Carlos Beltran is now the DH while Alex Rodriguez is on the disabled list. It doesn’t look like it will be a long absence for Gardner, but you can’t be too sure with some of these injuries.

Ben Gamel has a good combination of speed and contact, with some power mixed in as well. He gives the Yankees some added depth in the outfield, so he could find his way into a lineup. Let’s just hope he makes an impact on this team and helps them score some runs.

Ben Gamel is strictly a speculative add in case Gardner or any other outfielder goes on the disabled list. He is a must-add in deeper leagues, though. He was first on the list of Yankees call ups. That’s got to mean something, right?
