Week 2 Must Adds: Juan Nicasio, Domingo Santana

Heading into week two of the fantasy baseball season in 2016, Domingo Santana and Juan Nicasio are two guys to add from the waiver wire.

It’s only the first week of the season, but oftentimes it is even in this infant stage of the season that key playing time developments or lineup slots get ironed out. Owners will find it tough to get rid of guys who they thought would be key pieces to the team they drafted.

However, there are a few players that have already shown they are must-adds this early in the season. In standard leagues, it is very possible both of these players are just sitting there for the taking on the waiver wire, and you will not want to be facing them later in the season when everyone recognizes just how good they are.

Without further ado, here are the must-adds for the week.

Juan Nicasio, SP, PIT: There was a lot of buzz out of Pittsburgh camp this spring about another potential Ray Searage reclamation project. Searage is the Pirates’ pitching coach, and he has turned around the careers of countless pitchers, including guys like Edinson Volquez, J.A. Happ, and Francisco Liriano. Nicasio always showed a lot of arm talent in Colorado, but between the ballpark and a lack of control, he never instilled much confidence in fantasy owners.

Now that he can throw 95 away from the high altitude and with improved mechanics under Searage’s tutelage, there is a chance for a true breakout for the 29-year-old right-hander. His first start of the season came on Thursday against the division rival Cardinals, and he definitely impressed. He allowed only two hits over six innings, walking zero batters. The only run he allowed came on a Jeremy Hazelbaker solo home run.

That showing of improved control, along with the general suppression of a solid Cardinals’ lineup to just two hits, shows that Searage’s methods might be doing their magic. Get in while you still can.

Domingo Santana, OF, MIL: Domingo Santana was traded to Milwaukee from a crowded Houston farm system near the end of last year, and performed well down the stretch. That allowed him to come into the year with a starting outfield spot, and he has not disappointed.

The Brewers have started him off hitting leadoff, which is a boon for his fantasy value since he avoids the weak lower half of Milwaukee’s lineup. Santana has always had lots of power and speed, only struggling with strikeouts; while being wary of the small sample size, he has only struck out twice in twelve at bats, which would be a huge improvement for him if he kept it up. He has also walked twice, and he has shown an ability to hit the ball hard.

Although he has yet to homer or steal a base, both are coming, and he should have a job all year as Milwaukee looks to see what they have in this toolsy young outfielder. You should see what he has too as you add him to your team.
