Yoenis Cespedes: 3 Best Fantasy Free Agent Landing Spots

facebooktwitterreddit

Since he came over to the U.S. in 2012, Yoenis Cespedes has undoubtedly been one of the most exciting players in baseball to watch. His blend of raw power and freak like athleticism are skills that we rarely see and after a monster 2015, he looks poised to cash in with a big deal via free agency.

Easily the best move of the trade deadline was the Mets bring in Cespedes to revitalize their stagnant offense. He not only revitalized it, he single-handedly carried the Mets into October and showed the potential upside he has when he puts everything together.

Last season Cespedes posted a, .291/35 HR/105 RBI/.870 OPS/101 R/7 SB line, which easily ranked him amongst the top ten fantasy producers in the game. Heading into 2016, Cespedes could not have picked a better time to have a career season as he will be highly sought after this winter.

Here are the three best fantasy potential landing spots for Cespedes in 2016.

New York Yankees

As in the case of Justin Upton, Cespedes would fill a multitude of holes for the Yankees if they were to sign him. He would provide a prime right-handed power source for a team that desperately needs an infusion of younger talent to their offensive core. Outside of his 51 game stint with Boston, Cespedes has never had a full season in a hitter friendly ball park as Oakland, Detroit and the Mets ballparks are known to be pitchers havens.

Cespedes has the power to hit a homer out of Yellowstone, but if he could find himself in a bandbox ballpark over, we could see his power production rise even higher. The Yankees should have a decent lineup heading into 2016, but adding Cespedes could very well be the piece that cements it as one of the best in baseball. Look for Cespedes to match last year’s stats if he finds himself wearing pinstripes in 2016.

Texas Rangers

This is one of the more under the radar possible landing spots for Cespedes to land, as the Rangers are not usually discussed as one of his biggest suitors. They recently shipped Leonys Martin to Seattle, leaving them with a starting outfield now of Delino DeShields, Shin-Soo Choo, and Josh Hamilton. Even though that combination has some upside, Hamilton is certainly a wildcard, Choo seems to fight injuries every season, and DeShileds would be entering his sophomore season as a full-time starter.

Thus making the outfield a spot where the Rangers could use a steady upgrade. Cespedes could join Prince Fielder and company, which would provide a boost to Cespedes counting stats as the Rangers sport one of the better lineups in the league. Like with the Yankees, putting Cespedes in Globe Life Park in Arlington would be compelling to witness as Cespedes could very well see his homer output jump near the 40 mark. If he finds himself in Arlington, bump him up your ranks.

Chicago White Sox

You can notice the theme here as Cespdes’ fantasy value would increase even more heading into 2016 if he could find himself in one of the best hitter’s parks in the MLB. U.S. Cellular Field has notoriously been one of the better right-handed hitter’s ballparks and Cespedes could take full advantage of that by landing on the South Side.

The White Sox were a huge disappointment last season largely in part to an offense that was downright terrible. Outside of Jose Abreu, it would be hard to find anything that went offensively well for the White Sox last season, so pairing Cespedes with his fellow country mate would at least ensure an uptick in their run production.

They desperately need bats, and Cespedes could help solve that problem immediately. If he could land here, he should be able to easily surpass his career norms and post a line somewhat near his 2015 season. He will easily be an early round pick after last year’s performance, so adjust your rankings even further if he lands in a situation that can his enhance production.
