Fantasy Fallout: Sonny Gray Shut Down For The Year

With the Oakland A’s long out of playoff contention, they made the sound call to shut down Sonny Gray for the rest of 2015 due to an ailing left hip. While the move made sense for the team, it does come as a blow to owners who have rode Gray all the way until this championship week.
Gray’s 2015 campaign has been stellar to say the least. He capitalized on his breakout 2014, to post one of the better fantasy ace stat lines on the season, 208 IP/ 14 W/2.73 ERA/ 169 K. His strikeout clip did dip, but he made up for that with his weekly consistency.
With Sonny Gray being shut down, owners obviously have to scramble to find a replacement. With the week chalked full of doubleheaders, it is hard to really pinpoint starters later during the week, so I will offer replacements that are probable for tomorrow’s action as it is the easiest to predict who will actually start.

Jarred Cosart– Cosart’s season was derailed due to a bout with vertigo, so owners really have not had him on their radar too much in 2105. When he returned though, he has shown some flashes that Marlins fans hoped to see when they acquired him.
Over his four starts in September, Cosart has posted a 1.37 ERA over 19 innings and only surrendered three earned runs in the process. He hasn’t given up more than two earned runs, but his last start was halted when he was hit on the wrist by a comebacker. All reports say that he is good to go for his next start, so do not worry.
His next start comes against the light hitting Rays in Tampa, so there is room for value there. He would be a decent addition, but don’t set expectations too high.
Cody Anderson-I have touched on Anderson earlier this season during his hot streak and I even went to lengths to deem him the “next Dallas Keuchel”. I was certainly a little too optimistic based off their similar repertoires. But, Anderson has been pretty solid this season.
Even though he may not reach that Keuchel level of success, he has certainly been on a roll since his return for a DL stint. He has won his last four starts and over his last 36 innings he has only surrendered eight runs while sporting a tidy 1.98 ERA.
He faces the Twins next in Cleveland on the heels of beating them his last time out. He did surrender 10 hits, which isn’t ideal but he still managed to work around it and only give up a run. Anderson is certainly one of the hottest pitchers you are going to find on the waiver wire, so at this point of the season you really cannot ask for more in an injury replacement.
