The Boston Red Sox left fielder Hanley Ramirez left Monday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays after he crashed into the wall going after a line drive hit by James Loney. This is the same shoulder that Ramirez had surgically repaired twice due to extensive joint damage.

Manager John Farrell told ESPN reporters, “He’s [Ramirez] day-to-day right now.” Boston is trying to avoid putting their best hitter on the disabled list because they need his offensive production.

“He’s day-to-day right now. We’re hopeful over the next couple of days there’s some improvement. There’s no clear-cut DL at this point, so he’s day-to-day.”

Ramirez has had a history with shoulder injuries dating back to 2007 when he was with the Miami Marlins. He had surgery to repair a torn labrum, and made a full recovery. But in the 2011 season, Ramirez dove for a ball and his left shoulder popped out of socket, causing him to have surgery. This could be a serious problem for Ramirez if this injury is not resolved properly.

Ramirez tied a Red Sox record, previously held by David Ortiz, for the most home runs hit in the month of April with 10, and he has been a crucial part of their offense. Ramirez is, in my opinion, the most productive Red Sox hitter right now. Without him in the lineup, I am unsure as to how the team is going to play. They have one of the worst pitching staffs in all of baseball, so they have to produce a boatload of offense night in and night out just to have a chance at winning.

This obviously has numerous fantasy implications, like who will replace Ramirez? It seems that Allen Craig is going to fill in for Ramirez while he is hurt. Craig could be a huge fantasy waiver wire pickup this week, and he also could be a good play in any daily fantasy baseball contest. Craig had tremendous production with the Cardinals over the past few seasons, so he is more than capable of having productive games.
