The shortstop position was one of the worst to pick from on draft day. If you missed out on the top shortstops, then you either drafted a middle-of-the-road guy too early or were stuck waiting until the end of your draft. However, that might not have been a bad thing. Miami Marlins shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria has been a hidden gem this season. If he is still available, pick him up from the waiver wire.

Somewhat of an unknown, Hechavarria showed his ability to drive home runs early in his career. From 2012 to 2014, he hit 91 RBI in 1,205 at bats. This season, he’s scored 15 runs, hit two home runs and 16 RBI with a .320 batting average.

As the Marlins’ No. 8 batter, Hechavarria won NL Player of the Week honors on Monday. He went 12-for-24 with 10 RBIs and eight runs scored. He’ll continue his hot streak against the New York Mets.

Hechavarria currently leads the team in runs socred, second in RBI, behind Giancarlo Stanton, and third in on-base percentage (.342). He is a guy who gets on base and can score runs. He has speed, collecting 34 infield hits last season, but doesn’t show it on the base paths, 18 for 35 in his career.

With other shortstops like Xander Bogaerts or Jean Segura struggling and Jose Reyes injured, Hechavarria has been a fan-favorite among fantasy owners. He is currently owned in 69.9 percent of ESPN.com leagues. There’s been an increase of 67.8 percent over the last week, and rightfully so.

If you play in a deep league and looking for a starting shortstop, Hechavarria is a guy that’s going quicky. In standard leagues, you’ll have a better shot at picking up Hechavarria, but not by much.
