Starting pitching is very deep this season. There are viable options getting drafting towards the end of the draft. One of those pitchers will turn 42 at the end of May. New York Mets starting pitcher Bartolo Colon has been serviceable over the last four years and will be a sleeper pick in drafts this season.

Colon has been around forever. He was great during his time with the Cleveland Indians (3.92 ERA in six seasons), but it wasn’t until 2011 when Colon-mania reigned again. With the New York Yankees, Colon made 26 starts with a 4.00 ERA and 1.290 WHIP. He then played with the Oakland Athletics for two seasons, posting a 2.99 ERA, 1.185 WHIP and 208 strikeouts in 54 starts.

Last year with the Mets, he provided the team with 15 wins in 202 1/3 innings. He was good for most of his starts. He had 14 starts in which he pitched at least seven innings and allowed no more than two earned runs. Then there was the bad Colon, who allowed six or more earned runs on five different occasions.

He will start the season in the middle of the Mets rotation, behind Matt Harvey. Colon could continue his late-career resurgence. He could, however, show signs of decline. Like I said, he will turn 42 in May and the ability to get batters out will start to deteriorate. Last year, he was more prone to hard contact, especially to right-handed batters. If he can keep the ball low and force more groundouts, a 3.60 ERA is possible.

In standard 10-team leagues, Colon should be on no one’s roster at the end of the draft. However, he is dependable as a streaming option. If you play in 16-team or NL-only leagues, then Colon should be a late-round sleeper pick.

Expecting 2002 Colon numbers is outrageous, but seeing him pitch a 3.60 ERA and 1.200 WHIP should make any fantasy owner proud.
