If you’re a fan of the battery, you’ll enjoy Wednesday’s fantasy baseball stats recap, as it includes two catchers and two pitchers, including a few comparatively unexpected sources.

We start with a well known player that wishes he’s had a few more games like this in 2014.

Daily Fantasy Baseball Stats MVP

Brian McCann — New York Yankees

McCann had been cold for a few days heading into this game, but broke out of that in a nice way against the Rays. They’re not consistent, but the Yankees offense can put some runs on the board on occasion. McCann was locked in on Wednesday, and got plenty of help from his teammates.

This hasn’t been a great year for McCann. Certainly not what I was expecting when he signed with the Yankees.

Daily Fantasy Baseball Stats Honorable Mentions

1. James Shields — Kansas City Royals

[table id=1220 /]

They don’t call this guy Big Game James for nothing. As the stats show, Shields Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez, and the rest of the Tigers offense down, and that can never be ignored.

Shields has had a nice year, but is peaking at the right time for fantasy owners. Be happy if he’s on your team.

2. Aaron Harang — Atlanta Braves

[table id=1221 /]

I bet people were expecting the pitching star from this game to be Harang’s opponent, Stephen Strasburg. Things don’t always work out as we expect, though, as Harang wasn’t solid, he was spectacular.

I’m not exactly suggesting you go out and add Harang. After all, he’d had a few rough outings leading into this. But if you hung on to him after a nice start to the year, I’m happy your loyalty has finally paid off for a day.

3. Russell Martin — Pittsburgh Pirates

[table id=1222 /]

Either Chris Young or Caleb Joseph could have gotten this spot, but neither carry enough fantasy relevance. Martin isn’t owned in a lot of leagues, but like Harang, does have a high enough ownership rate to be considered.

Plus, he was good, really good. Actually, Martin has had a very nice week, hitting safely in four consecutive games — recording multiple hits in all but one of them. It’s not a prolonged hot streak, but it’s worth noting, especially at this time of the year. Hot streaks don’t have to be that long to help for the rest of the season.
