With the warmer weather and most of Sunday’s action coming during the day, most of the top fantasy baseball stats belonged to hitters.
Still, a few pitchers did turn in top notch performances, including the day’s top star.
Daily Fantasy Baseball MVP
Kyle Lohse — Milwaukee Brewers
Kyle Lohse: April 13
We’re certainly used to seeing strong games from Lohse, but nine strikeouts was definitely a bonus for his fantasy owners (present company included).
You shouldn’t expect this kind of K output from Lohse, who’s always pitched to contact. But he’s got an ERA just above 3.00 and a WHIP and a 1.11 WHIP after only three starts. That may not seem like much, but one of those starts wasn’t even that good, which frequently blows those numbers up early in the year. Definitely a guy to consider going after.
Daily Honorable Mentions
1. Ben Zobrist — Tampa Bay Rays
Ben Zobrist: April 13
Of only the rest of his teammates had hit like Zobrist did on Sunday, he might have another RBI or two to go with what was already a great day. While Zobrist can certainly hit the long ball, days like this are a nice bonus for his fantasy owners.
Zobrist is now up to nearly a .280 average. With his eligibility and some sneaky power, his fantasy value can very easily return to what it was before a down year in 2013.
2. Freddie Freeman — Atlanta Braves
Freddie Freeman: April 13
Very close to Zobrist, but the extra home run gives Zobrist the slight edge over Freddie. Still, Freeman is off to a scalding hot start and when the weather heats up, his power numbers will only be better. It’s very possible that we could be looking at a Top-10 player by season’s end, as days like this are anything but a fluke.
3. Scott Kazmir — Oakland Athletics
Scott Kazmir: April 13
Kazmir doesn’t have a big availability rate, but it’s bigger than it should be given how well he’s pitching, and how well the A’s consistently pitch.
Monitor the injury that he left the game with on Sunday. If it’s minor (as it appears), go out and sign him as soon as you can. He’s definitely the kind of guy you want rounding out your rotation.
