Everyone loves to play the “What if” game, right? Well, let’s play it right here, right now!

What if… big name free agent Curtis Granderson, formerly of the New York Yankees —who is currently being heavily pursued by the New York Mets — ended up with the Boston Red Sox? According to CBS Sports, it’s a possibility.

Now this is the stuff that high drama televisions is made up of right? Longtime Red Sox OF Jacoby Ellsbury just signed with the Yankees, so perhaps it would be fitting for the Sox to land Grandy. It would certainly add to more pre-series hype for the TV networks, at least.

Now, conventional wisdom would say that Fenway Park would be a better destination than Citi Field for home runs. But that was barely the case in 2012 and was far from it in 2013, which is relevant as 2012 they moved the fences in at Citi Field. [table id=125 /]

Still, Boston is the better landing spot for Granderson. The lineup help is a significant upgrade in Beantown than in the other New York, who currently don’t have much to offer outside of David Wright. So, Granderson could stand to gain a lot more production outside of just homers. Also, staying in the American League would allow Grandy to DH when he needs to, which is relevant for a guy nearing his mid-30’s/

Granderson also seemed to do well on the big stage playing for the Yankees. If he signs in Boston, he’ll be playing for the reigning World Series champions and could still part of the Redsox/Yankees rivalry — which is without a doubt the Broadway of baseball stages. Playing for the Mets would be like being off Broadway. When an actor goes from Broadway to off Broadway, their career is not going in the right direction.

Now, Grandy is coming off a very down year, mostly due to injury, but he wasn’t very good even when on the field, especially in the season’s final month. So there is room for some skepticism, and he is only getting older (33 by the start of next season).

Nevertheless, Granderson is a guy that given the right situation could be a very good fantasy producer this season. Remember, he is only one season removed from a 43 bomb campaign, which came after a 41 homer season. So, I will be very interested to see where he lands this Hot Stove season and for fantasy purposes, I hope he goes to Boston. So should you.
